The Triumph of Icarus

They say that Icarus’s story is a cautionary tale

of how a youth’s life was cut short

because he flew too close to the sun.

But what they overlook is that

Icarus had lived more in a few seconds

than others had lived in a lifetime.

Icarus was never meant to live a long life.

He was meant to live.

And in those short moments,

he lived more than most.

He flew higher

than any mortal

had ever dreamed.

He was so close that

if he had reached out a bit more,

he could have touched the sun.

And when Icarus fell from the sky,

he wasn’t afraid,

he was elated.

With the air beneath him,

and the blue sky above him,

Icarus wasn’t falling.

His soul was still soaring

towards the warmth

of the immortal sun.
